Diabetes Mixer

After caring for a handful of  patients with type 1 diabetes who felt isolated due to diabetes, I envisioned a social event for my patients and other individuals with type 1 diabetes to meet and connect. With the leadership and creativity of MJ Tran, we created the Diabetes Mixer. The Diabetes Mixer is a social networking event for 21-35 year olds with type 1 diabetes in Utah. Each attendee can bring a guest to support them at the event. Unlike a support group, the atmosphere of the Diabetes Mixer is non-clinical. With free food, live music, and prizes, one might confuse the Diabetes Mixer for a party.

The Diabetes Mixers is sponsored by Sigma Theta Tau International, Gamma Rho Chapter, a non-profit honors nursing society based out of the University of Utah. This event is also supported by businesses interested in diabetes care management including companies focused on diabetes supplies, medications, insulin pumps, and continuous glucose monitoring systems.

The 1st Diabetes Mixer was held on April 25, 2011 at the Wild Grape Bistro in Salt Lake City. Our featured speaker was Mike Lawson, who spoke about how he used the diabetes online community to stay positive after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a young adult. With the help of our sponsor, exhibitors, overwhelming community donors, and volunteers, the Diabetes Mixer was a huge success. A 2-minute video clip of the 1st Diabetes Mixer can be seen here:

Based on the success of the 1st Diabetes Mixer, we were asked to host an encore Diabetes Mixer in 2011. With continued sponsor, Sigma Theta Tau International, Gamma Rho Chapter, and new partner, the Utah Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, the 2nd Biannual Diabetes Mixer was held on October 10, 2011. With the theme “Express Yourself,” our featured speaker, Ginger Vieira, used slam poetry as an expression to describe her experience with type 1 diabetes.

The third Diabetes Mixer will be held on April 30, 2012 and will be open to any adult with type 1 diabetes. Sponsors include Sigma Theta Tau International Gamma Rho Chapter, Diabetes Specialty Center, Diabetic Connect, and Sugar-Free Comedy. RSVP at diabetesmixer@gmail.com!
